Whey protein is one of the most widely used and heavily researched dietary supplements in the world. Yet for beginners the terminology can be confusing: concentrate, isolate, hydrolysate, BCAAs, complete protein. This guide breaks down what whey protein actually is, where it comes from, and what the evidence says about how it fits into a balanced diet.

Where whey protein comes from

Milk contains two main types of protein: casein (roughly 80%) and whey (roughly 20%). When milk is turned into cheese, an enzyme causes it to separate into solid curds and a liquid. That liquid is whey. Historically it was treated as a by-product, but it is now filtered, purified and dried into the powder used in supplements and food products.

Whey is a complete protein, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids the human body cannot make on its own. It is also particularly rich in leucine, the amino acid most strongly associated with switching on muscle protein synthesis. This combination is a large part of why whey is so popular among athletes and older adults trying to maintain muscle.

The three main types of whey

Whey protein concentrate (WPC)

Concentrate is the least processed and usually the most affordable form. Depending on the grade, it contains roughly 70-80% protein by weight, with the remainder made up of some fats and lactose (milk sugar). For most people, concentrate is a perfectly good everyday choice.

Whey protein isolate (WPI)

Isolate is filtered further to remove most of the fat and lactose, typically reaching 90% or more protein by weight. It tends to be a better option for people who are sensitive to lactose or who want to minimise fat and carbohydrate intake. It is usually more expensive than concentrate.

Whey protein hydrolysate (WPH)

Hydrolysate is "pre-digested": the protein chains are partly broken down into smaller fragments, which can speed absorption slightly. Research suggests any practical advantage for muscle growth is modest for most people, so hydrolysate is generally reserved for specific clinical or performance situations.

What the evidence says about whey and muscle

The strongest, most consistent finding is that adequate total daily protein intake, combined with resistance training, increases muscle mass and strength over time. Protein supplements such as whey are simply a convenient way to help hit that daily target. A landmark 2018 meta-analysis by Morton and colleagues, pooling data from 49 studies, confirmed that protein supplementation meaningfully augments gains in muscle size and strength during resistance training.

Importantly, the same research shows there is a ceiling: beyond roughly 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight per day, extra protein produced little additional benefit for muscle. Whey is not magic; it is a practical tool for reaching a sensible total.

How to use whey protein

  • As a convenience: a scoop typically provides 20-25 g of protein, useful when whole-food meals are impractical.
  • Around training: many people use it before or after workouts, though total daily intake matters far more than precise timing.
  • To boost meals: it can be added to oats, yoghurt or smoothies to raise the protein content of a meal.

Whey is a food-derived supplement, not a drug. For healthy individuals with normal kidney function, typical supplemental intakes are considered safe. People with existing kidney disease, or those who are pregnant, should speak with a healthcare professional before making significant dietary changes.

Is whey right for everyone?

Whey is derived from milk, so it is unsuitable for people with a milk allergy and for those following a vegan diet. People with lactose intolerance often tolerate isolate better than concentrate because most of the lactose has been removed. For those who cannot or prefer not to use dairy, high-quality plant proteins such as soy, or blends of pea and rice, are effective alternatives.
